604-8G questions

The 620 is the best enclosure for the 604-8G. The only drawback to it is they are bulky.

I'm new in the board and the Altec universe. Just received my 8Gs.

What cabinet would you recommend for them? Looked at the 620 plans but any suggestions from more experienced users are welcome.

A second question is regarding the magnetic field. It seems very weak. Both LF and HF cannot even hold a screw driver. Is this normal? Are they magnetically shielded?

I have 604E's and 8G's and so far my best experience is with a factory 620 cabinet. I tried a smaller cabinet based on info from an on line calculator but it had almost no bass below about 70Hz, which reminded me of lowthers. The 620's may not be the last word in neutrality but they are a good compromise.
The magnetic attraction to the outside of the alnico drivers doesn't seem like much but make sure to keep a firm grip on the end of your screwdriver if you're going to take the compression driver out. The alnico magnets are surprizingly strong.

alnico with magnet cover would function like a shielded driver and will not hold a screwdriver. That is one advantage of a 604g in a center channel HT setup. You can set your tv on top of an enclosure with the alnico drive that has a magnet cover on it.
